About the company

Ballarat Roadworthy Centre is a locally owned and operated workshop that has been servicing Victoria for over 20 years and keeping Victorian drivers safe for 25 years. James is the current owner and has been in the business for 17 years. The workshop is an accredited VACC workshop, a Green Stamp Accredited Workshop, an accredited NHVR testing station for heavy vehicles, and an accredited bus inspection centre for Ballarat for both light and heavy buses. It is the only workshop in Ballarat with a fixed brake roller tester.

The business won the Central Highlands Water Trade Business Award and was a winner at the Federation University Commerce Ballarat Business Excellence Awards in 2022 and 2024. Its team includes both light and heavy vehicle inspectors. Ballarat Roadworthy Centre provides annual bus inspections required by Transport Safety Victoria on all types and sizes of buses for customers all over Victoria, working with public, private and not-for-profit bus operators. It specialises in safety-focused inspections and mechanical repairs across all types of vehicles, from everyday runabouts, family cars, utes and 4WDs through to motorcycles and buses.

What customers say

Based on genuine customer reviews

Owners bringing in vehicles for roadworthy inspections, work vans and even a motorhome purchased interstate have found the Ballarat Roadworthy Centre easy to deal with. The workshop handles inspections, repairs and maintenance across cars and trucks, and various customers describe being fitted in without a booking and having the job finished within the timeframe they were given. Punctuality and speed come up repeatedly, with reviewers noting prompt, professional service and clear communication from the first enquiry through to collection.

Pricing is described as fair and reasonable, and one customer reports the final cost coming in below the original quote. Named staff members Nikki and Ange are singled out for friendly, attentive care, and the wider team is praised for following through on what was promised, whether the task was a standard inspection or repairs after an accident. A detail many reviews return to is the confidence the service instils, with repeat visits using both trucks and cars. Tidiness, expertise and straightforward advice round out the accounts from this Delacombe workshop.

My mum attended Ballarat Roadworthy centre, after taking a newly purchased car there to have the breaks checked. She was quoted over $1400 and told the front and back rotors were completely worn as well as the break pads worn and all needed replacing. My mum called around and got quotes for the same work, and the quotes were significantly cheaper. She took the car to another mechanic, and they pulled the car apart, to only find out that the front rotors were brand new, the back rotors were used, but nowhere near needing to be replaced. They also found the break pads were brand new. Cost her $80 to tell her that everything was okay. Not a great experience for an older woman. My experience with these guys was good in the past, but seems like things have slipped and honesty has gone out the window.

I bought a motorhome from Queensland and was looking for a roadworthy certificate. Melton Mechanic quoted me $1000 just for a Roadworthy Certificate, plus separate fees for a Gas certificate and an electrical certificate. Plus any repair to things needed VicRoads also advised us to provide a gas certificate. I contacted Ballarat Roadworthy Centre and was impressed by their booking availability and by their general inquiry regarding the motorhome's roadworthiness. Guess what? I don't need a gas certificate. I argued with the receptionist that VicRoads had asked me to provide one, and they told me to open the passenger-side door and show them the compliance plate. They did my roadworthy for $650, and the three items required were a reflector, a bulb, and a fire extinguisher. They call you before they install anything, which is actually a good practice. All up, it cost $898, whereas Melton Mechanic quoted me over $2000. I will definitely recommend Ballarat Roadworthy Centre, and whenever my next service is due, I’ll still go there. It’s a bit of a drive, but it gives me peace of mind. I checked most of their reviews before going there, and all were happy customers.
