From the moment I walked in, the team was professional, friendly, and upfront about everything. They took the time to clearly explain what needed to be done, provided a fair and transparent quote, and completed the work on time. It’s rare to find a workshop that combines deep technical knowledge—especially with 4WDs and automatic transmissions—with such honest service. The quality of workmanship is outstanding. My vehicle runs smoother than ever, and I have complete confidence in the repairs and servicing they carried out. They genuinely care about their customers and treat every vehicle as if it were their own. If you want reliable, efficient, and top-quality mechanical work, I highly recommend Town Automatics 4WD & Mechanical. Five stars all the way!
After i was quite oddly quieried about my occupation and my salary, i got charged over $3.5k for work to fix a problem my van had. 2 minutes down the road the problem was still there. The older gentleman out the front basically told me its not their problem as it didnt do it when they took it for a test drive. Took the van to Bob Freemans who picked up in about 5 minutes that it was the coolant sensor for the ecu which he fixed for less than $250 by the end of that day.
Have only had trouble with our 4wd since we took it to Townsville automatics. Expensive too much poor workmanship and we are still fixing problems with the transmission that they rebuilt. NEVER GO HERE And just received a generic reply to my review. Get in touch so we can fix the problem. Have already been back maybe 5 times and you cannot fix it so have had to go elsewhere. Thanks for nothing
I had an outstanding experience with Town Automatics. From start to finish, the team was professional, knowledgeable, and transparent. They thoroughly explained the issues with my transmission and provided a fair, detailed quote before starting any work. The repair was completed efficiently, and my vehicle drives better than ever. The staff went above and beyond to ensure I was informed at every step, and their expertise is clearly top-notch. I highly recommend Town Automatics to anyone in need of transmission repair – they are reliable, trustworthy, and genuinely care about their customers
Absolutely amazing experience! The staff were not only incredibly helpful but also very knowledgeable. They took the time to answer all my questions, made everything easy to understand, and went above and beyond to ensure I was satisfied. Highly recommend!
I needed a transmission service but did it elsewhere as their cost for it seemed fairly high for the job. They informed me that my timing belt is in need of replacement, which is good, but quoted me DOUBLE what a more reasonable shop offered me for that job. They also said there was a leak in the transmission, so I agreed to have that done. The leak was fixed - then when I took it to the other shop to have TB and WP replaced, they said there was a leak in the transmission pan gasket!! So even the thing I entrusted Town Automatics to do, fix any faults or leaks with the transmission, they did an incomplete job on. I'd expect more from a transmission expert... I first took my VW to another transmission specialist which said they would not work on it as it was too old and niche that they'd lack the expertise to work on it effectively. But at least then I appreciate the honesty.
Had these guys install a transmission cooler in 2020. Cooler developed leaks in 2022 and again now. Said they wouldn't cover the part as only offered 20,000km or 12 month guarantee. Not great but if that's all they do then fair enough. Booked in with them to get this new leak fixed. I asked for the records of the previous leak but apparently they couldn't provide because the business had been sold (but they could contact the previous owners and try to get the records). Also, the old owner's son still works in the business. They end up doing a full transmission service and charging. This was also done when the last leak occurred only 13,000km ago. This wasn't asked for. When I raised this over email - no response. I went to see them in person. Their response: It was definitely a different cause of leak to last time. Last time was the rubber seals and this time was the clamps were loose. They know this because they checked the records from the last job - but they couldn't show me the records, because they didn't have access to the records, because the business had been sold and they lost access, but the previous owners son (in the room) could still get access but they couldn't show me due to not having access (not making this up). The owner then claimed I was quoted $750 for the transmission service. I asked him to produce the quote and he could not. No quote was ever given. He produced a contact details card which they give to you blank and fill out job details after. He claimed this was authorisation. The correspondance they have with me says (and only says) "Diagnose Leak from Transmission". The previous owner's son sort of gave the game away. He said because I cared about the reliability of the cooler I must surely have wanted a full transmission service (I just didn't want my car dripping transmission oil from their cooler). Seems like a well practiced hustle. Would advise to steer clear.
